The Coronation — Beyond the Headlines Gala

You are warmly invited to The Coronation — Beyond the Headlines Gala, the Biennial Influencer Dinner, and Oakland Leaders Roast benefiting the Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation (BCZCDC). This black-tie gala is the signature fundraising event of the biennial series, bringing together philanthropists, corporate partners, civic leaders, media professionals, influencers, and community members committed to advancing Black excellence and strengthening East Oakland’s cultural and economic future.

The evening features a red-carpet arrival, cocktail hour with live entertainment, a gourmet dinner, and a powerful program centered on storytelling, recognition, and impact. A defining highlight is the Inaugural Legacy Roast—centered on the BCZCDC Founding CEO and other Oakland leaders—delivered by a professional roast master. This signature moment blends humor and respect to celebrate leadership, resilience, and the collective work of building lasting community power.

The gala also honors Narrative Champions—journalists, media outlets, influencers, and public affairs leaders who have helped elevate authentic, joyful, and transformative stories about Black communities. Through awards, a live auction, and intentional networking, The Coronation — Beyond the Headlines Gala serves as both a cultural celebration and a critical fundraising platform supporting the long-term infrastructure of the Black Cultural Zone CDC.

The Black Cultural Zone (BCZ) drives a vibrant renaissance in legacy Black communities by unapologetically centering Black arts, culture, and economics. Defined by Place, Partners, and Purpose, we serve all current and Legacy Residents who live/lived, work/worked, and create/created in this community.

The Place (The Zone): Our vibrant cultural campus is a 60x60 block area in East Oakland, comprising 12 districts. It is the foundation, celebrating the people, places, and history that define our community.

The Partners (The Collaborative): This powerful network of 90+ partners (residents, churches, public agencies) works together to preserve and uplift Black culture, arts, and community in the City of Oakland, fulfilling the vision of a thriving community

The Purpose (The CDC): The CDC is our nonprofit developer, revitalizing the Place by designing and transforming it. We acquire and develop Hubs, Places, and Spaces to ensure perpetual community ownership and economic vitality.
